The Pickett Fence 3/8/17

Spring Break here we come!  I hope that everyone has some fun plans over our break off, perhaps a nice week on the beach, or skiing in the mountains.  Penelope and I will just be hanging out on the couch, relaxing and catching up on some to-dos!

Before we say goodbye for a few days, I have a couple notes and reminders for the upcoming weeks.  Please take a minute to read through our email and I will see everyone soon!
Nora Carney – Shoe Drive

Dear Fifth Grade Students and Parents,
Hi, my name is Norah and this year for lent instead of just giving up something I am going to give back. This year I want to start a fifth grade shoe drive. The reason I want to start a fifth grade shoe drive is because I have heard stories about people in India that walk barefoot around because they can't afford shoes. That is not just happening around India, it happening around Kansas City too! So to help around here I am going to place a bin or box by each fifth grade classroom. I would like you to at least bring in one gently used or new shoe to place in the box. Fill up those boxes! After we have collected all of the shoes the donations will be given to the Catholic Charities Foundation. It starts March 6th and ends April 7th. Bring in those SHOES! Thank you for your help! -Norah Carney

Stations of the Cross – Readers
This year, our class has been asked to be the readers at the Live Stations of the Cross viewing, scheduled for April 7th from 1:30-230 at the church.  For this event, Miss Drey’s class will be acting out the stations, live, and our class will be narrating, reading prayers, and announcing each station.  Every student in our class will have a speaking or singing part for this service.  Coming home, after break, your child will be given their reading to practice.  We will also practice this several times in the classroom.

Mark your calendars for April 7th!  We would love to have your support for this event!

Serving
Attached to our email, I have included our server schedule.  Our class will start serving in April.  Each student will serve two days in a row (Mon/Tues) or (Thurs/Friday) for the 8:00 mass.  They will also train the day before (Wed/Friday) for their serving in order to be prepared for a live mass.
The schedule is for both you and your child so you are aware of the dates they are serving, if you would like to attend these weekly masses.  Once all fifth graders have served, they will be put on the Wednesday mass schedule, and perhaps weekends too!

Hospital PBL
The fifth grade teachers are gearing up for another fun PBL and are reaching out again for some contacts and/or help in gathering some supplies.  The theme this time will be a hospital and we are looking for some consumable items.  If you are in the medical field or know of how we can gather some of these items, we would appreciate your support!

Specifically, we are looking for gloves, hats, masks, iv bags, etc.  Anything that we could use to turn our classrooms into a ‘hospital’ feel!  We do not need these items for several weeks, but we wanted to start gathering and looking for suppliesJ

Moving forward, we may also be reaching out for some help organizing materials and supplies, and maybe some volunteers, as we get closer to the event!  Thank you for your help!!

Recycled Materials
If you have any interesting containers, buckets, that you might be throwing away, we may be able to put them to use in the classroom.  Please feel free to send any recyclable items for us to use in our classroom projects.  If there is anything we don’t I will be happy to recycle it for you!  Thanks!

Fifth Grade Auction Wish Lists and Party

With the auction quickly approaching, the fifth grade teachers are excited to share some of our wish list items with you as we continue preparing our students for a world which we do not know.

Did you know that our fifth grade students will be retiring in 2070?  What will life be like then, and how can we prepare students for the unknown?  As fifth grade teachers, we are trying to build our students skills using problem solving strategies, engineering and cooperation.

Our wish list items include ozobots, littlebits, and Edison robots which will allow our students to becoming familiar with not only the engineer aspects of these devices, but also the software development!
Check out the Ozobots here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xFjTXQ8uho
Here is a quick view of the Edison Robots:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skmVeFYgHCs

We would like to encourage you to donate to our wish list items, even if you cant attend, you can still support this mission!

Finally, we would also encourage you to purchase a place at our Fifth Grade Auction party at Sky Zone!  Again, feel free to join in, even if you cant attend on Feb 17th!

Scholastic Book Orders

I am giving a few extra days to get in scholastic book orders.  I plan on submitting my order on Wednesday of this week.  If your child has a birthday book coupon I would encourage them to pick out a favorite and send their form into school prior to Wednesday!  Please look online, www.scholasticbooks.com  classcode:  Gpypp

President/First Lady Research Paper
Due to my absences last week, we are a little off of our schedule, however with a little extra work in the classroom, I hope to get back on track with the rest of fifth grade.  I would encourage you to check in with your fifth grader in the hopes of helping with the time management piece of this paper.

The fifth grade students will be working on a research paper based on a first lady or former president of the United States.  Their paper will include three different resources, included websites and books.  Coming home tonight will be a packet of information that will lay this project out for you in greater detail.  There will also be a schedule of due dates for different portions of the assignment.  To wrap up this project, students will participate in a wax museum and will share out what they learned!  Stay tuned for specific dates and times of this event!
